Universal Credit Childcare

For working families claiming Universal Credit.

Universal Credit childcare

Get up to 85% of your childcare costs paid back, up to £1,071.09 per month for one child.

  • You must pay for childcare yourself first, then claim reimbursement.
  • You may be eligible for an initial upfront childcare cost payment to help with costs before your first reimbursement.
  • Cannot be used alongside Tax-Free Childcare.
  • Childcare must be with an Ofsted-registered provider (in England).
  • No minimum hours requirement, but childcare hours must relate to hours worked.
  • Universal Credit can cover up to 85% of eligible childcare costs (subject to monthly limits), but the amount received in your Universal Credit award will depend on your individual circumstances.

Tax-Free Childcare

If you’re a working parent or carer, you can get a £2 top-up for every £8 that you pay towards childcare.

To be eligible for Tax-Free Childcare, you, and your partner (if you have one), must:

  • be at least 16 years old
  • be in the UK, or treated as being in the UK
  • be responsible for the child you are applying for
  • be in qualifying paid work, which can include being:
    • self-employed
    • on shared parental, maternity, paternity, or adoption leave
    • on sick leave or annual leave
    • getting statutory neonatal care pay
    • on bereaved partner paternity leave
  • expect to earn on average at least a weekly amount equivalent to 16 hours a week at the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage over the next 3 months
  • not have adjusted net income (ANI) of more than £100,000 per year. If you or your partner have an expected ANI income over £100,000 in the current tax year you will not be eligible. Foreign income is part of adjusted net income calculation, so worldwide income must be included when assessing ANI.
  • not be in receipt of:
    • Universal Credit
    • Childcare Vouchers

Childcare Grant

Eligibility

To qualify for a Childcare Grant all the following must apply:

  • you’re a full-time student (studying 120 credits or more)
  • your child must be under 15, or under 17 if they have special educational needs
  • you get student finance based on your household income (or are eligible for this)
  • you’re not getting a Postgraduate Loan
  • you’re a permanent resident in England
  • your household income is less than £20,107.23 – if you’re applying for 1 child
  • your household income is less than £28,914.47 – if you’re applying for 2 or more children
  • neither you or your partner are claiming Tax-Free Childcare, the childcare element of working Tax Credit or Universal Credit
  • neither you or your partner receive help with childcare costs from the NHS
  • the children in your grant application are financially dependent on you
  • your childcare provider is on the Ofsted Early Years Register or General Childcare Register – check with your provider

Learner Support

Eligibility

Contact your learning provider to check if they offer Learner Support and if you’re eligible for it.

To get Learner Support you must be:

  • 19 or over (you must be 20 or over to get funding for childcare costs)
  • studying for a qualification at level 3 or below
  • in financial hardship – your learning provider might ask for proof that you’re on a low income
